Emanative: Lions Of Judah

Before the forthcoming The Light Years Of The Darkness LP release (see below) there was the Lions Of Judah single by emanative for the Steve Reid Foundation.

The illustrations for both the single and the LP were done by Gene Pendon and it was a joy to collaborate with him on both jobs.

Sneak preview: emanative

A sneak preview of the forthcoming emanative LP ‘The Light Years Of The Darkness’ (front and back sleeve shown below).

The album is coming out on Brownswood recordings for the Steve Reid Foundation. And just in case you haven’t heard about the Foundation before I think it is worth me repeating the About page here:

“I started the Steve Reid Foundation as a tribute to a legendary musician, an inspiring human being and a good friend. Steve Reid was a phenomenal jazz drummer from New York, who worked with many of the music greats like Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Sun Ra. His illustrious career was also marked by innovation, experimentation and breaking frontiers, especially through his collaborations with Keiran Hebden (Four Tet).

In 2009, Steve was diagnosed with throat cancer, and it was during one of my visits to New York that I became aware of the extent of his suffering. I was horrified by the conditions he was living in during his last days. He was practically living in near poverty, and he couldn’t afford the medical treatment he needed that might have saved his life. Steve died in 13 April 2010.

Steve is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. Aside from having enormous talent, the most incredible stories and a zest for life, he had a big heart and a generous spirit, and to this day I feel humbled when I remember how modest he was. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Steve Reid’s life than to start a charity to help other musicians in his name.If you love music like I do, please support the people making it.” – Gilles Peterson

Best Art Vinyl Awards 2014

Big news at Made In Earnest HQ today as our design for the Nostalgia 77 And The Monster LP ‘Measures’ has been nominated for the Best Art Vinyl Awards 2014.

As you can see above it is a slightly unusual design with everything on the front cover, but we felt this worked well with the busy nature of the image. The back cover has the image wrapped around from the front and has no type on it. This is a slightly different design from the CD cover (below).

To be honest I don’t expect to win, but it is great to be nominated.

A shortlist of 50 record covers have been nominated for the award and the public will be invited to vote for their favourites which will ultimately decide the winner. Voting is open in participating venues and on artvinyl.com and the winners will be revealed in January 2015. Fingers crossed…

The Horticulturist redesign

The first issue of the redesigned Horticulturist magazine has arrived back from the printers and so far the feedback from the Chartered Institute of Horticulture has been extremely positive, which makes the hard work and long hours all worthwhile.

The Secret List: Paris launch

The Paris edition of The Secret List is getting a swanky book launch in December at the excellent Superfly Records.

I’ll be there to talk to anyone about the design of the books, but more importantly than that, the author will be there to discuss the project. There will be a book signing session, a Q&A and some good records played. It is a free event and all are welcome. Books will be on sale and the record store will still be open for business, but if you can’t wait until then you can buy the book here.

Mo Kolours Pan-Galactic Tour

Mo Kolours is about the embark on his Pan-Galactic Tour and to celebrate he has a new track here. The poster below shows the dates of the tour in full.

The tour will showcase the debut Mo Kolours album that came out recently and as such, this is an ideal opportunity for me to post properly about that album. It came out as an LP and CD and there was even a limited edition tee shirt produced. All or some of which will be available to buy at each venue of the tour.

As with all the images in the Made In Earnest portfolio these were taken by Jonathan Stokes.

Dig A Little

Not long ago Dig A Little was born and as the promotional material says, ‘it’s a monthly excursion into the joys of vinyl’. Basically, it’s a record fair with DJs and thanks to it’s success so far it has grown into a monthly DJ night as well (called Revolutions).

The first Dig took place at the Forest Tavern, E7 in February and it has been monthly there ever since. A second event is now set to launch at the Eltham GPO in Eltham, SE9. All of which makes for an interesting branding exercise…

Blind Hamlet

Actors Touring Company will once again be at the Edinburgh Festival – this time with Nassim Soleimanpour’s play Blind Hamlet – and we have done the artwork to go with the show. If you are in Edinburgh you should start to see the flyers and posters around the city, as well as the banners on various websites.

In Blind Hamlet, Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour confronts the slow loss of his sight and the fact that he’s never read Hamlet. But with tragedy looming, he chooses instead to play with the truth and fiction, chance and fate. A surprise-laden meditation on what it means to act and interact in a shrinking world, Blind Hamlet is theatre about choices in which the audience chooses. If you want to go, it is on at the Assembly Roxy.
